Guillaume Bégin Champagne is based in Montréal, is fascinated by frieze motifs and narratives inscribed in endless loops. His work is inspired by historical sources, in particular the illustrations adorning the margins of medieval manuscripts. As a queer person, he is drawn to these marginalized figures because their presence challenges the social norms of the texts they accompany. His process is slow and meticulous, rather like that of medieval scribes. He uses the Mishima technique for engraving in colored porcelain. Through form, process, and symbolism, his pieces celebrate the margins for what they are: spaces of freedom and transformation.

Each piece is hand-made using traditional techniques, making every piece unique. Minor variations are part of the work’s artisanal nature and contribute to its character and beauty.
