A child discovers a pearl at the bottom of the ocean. He crafts a simple, makeshift ring for his sweetheart. That night, a magpie steals the pearl, which ends up in a nest where a cat snatches it away. This marks the beginning of a long journey that takes the pearl across the world and through time. We find it, in turn, in a jeweler’s workshop, on a queen’s crown, at the heart of an exhibition, in a thief’s bag, in the sewers, in a beaver’s lodge… and finally, in the hands of an old man who is none other than the boy who found it years earlier. The man then places it back on the small, makeshift ring, which he once again offers to the woman who has remained his beloved all these years.
This narrative loop, spanning a lifetime, takes us through a changing world—one that the images sometimes show as turbulent and hostile—only to bring us back, in the end, to the peaceful refuge of love.
