In 2025, Clément Thoby traveled to Montreal to explore the landscapes, lights, and settings of Québec cinema. After extensive documentary research and a few sleepless nights lit only by his screen, the Parisian illustrator selected six emblematic scenes from six films that portray a tiny yet fascinating part of the history of Québec’s seventh art. A residency organized in partnership with KIBLIND, as part of the IF Export program of the Institut français.

Like a memory from who knows where. A fleeting image we keep in the back of our mind in case the need for comfort becomes too insistent, without really knowing whether it truly belongs to us. Such are the drawings of Clément Thoby—works that evoke more than they describe, that transport more than they tell. The Parisian artist’s sharp, lively line has the power to slip into our intimacy, to infiltrate our mental space and become a pillar we can lean on. For these colors feel familiar to us, these lights have already dazzled us, and these places—even if we’ve never been to them—we have already dreamed of.
