VHS tapes, David Boreanaz, and the 56k modem—the icons that defined the previous generation—have long since been swept away by the winds of time. Luca Bjørnsten, however, recalls them with delight. And it is with emotion that he brings them to life in his works, which showcase the boundless kitsch that surrounded the imagery of the 1990s and 2000s. While the Danish artist draws on fevered memories, he doesn’t turn them into a cloying nostalgic mush. Hypnotized by the powerful colors and unnatural light so characteristic of that era, he honors them by pushing their limits to the extreme, creating a garish nostalgia steeped in dripping marshmallows. Alluring and sickening, the era thus regains all its ambivalence and finally appears more real than life itself.
